What is a date duration calculator?
A date duration calculator finds the calendar difference between two dates. It shows the result as years, months, and days, plus the total number of days and a weeks-and-days breakdown.
The calculation runs entirely in your browser. The dates you enter are not uploaded to Bitty Coder.
How to use the date duration calculator
- Choose a Start date and an End date.
- Turn on Include end date when both boundary dates should count.
- Read the calendar duration, total days, and weeks + days.
The results update immediately. Use Today beside either date to insert your local calendar date, Swap to exchange the dates, or Copy to copy a complete result summary.
Example: days between two dates
From January 1, 2026 to January 10, 2026, the elapsed duration is:
9 daysTurn on Include end date and the same range becomes 10 days because January 10 also counts.
Calendar duration vs. total days
Calendar duration and total days describe the same interval in different ways.
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| Years, months, days | Complete calendar units followed by the remaining days |
| Total days | The entire interval expressed as one day count |
| Weeks + days | The total day count grouped into seven-day weeks |
A month is not a fixed number of days: it can contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days. For that reason, the calendar result is calculated from the actual dates instead of converting total days with a fixed month length.
Does the end date count?
By default, the calculator measures elapsed time and excludes the final boundary. January 1 to January 10 is therefore 9 days.
Turn on Include end date to count both dates. The option changes every displayed result to the same inclusive counting rule, which is useful for attendance, travel, or any date range where each calendar day counts.
Leap years and different month lengths
The calculator uses real calendar months and leap-year rules. February 29 is valid in a leap year, and month-end calculations are clamped to the last valid day of the target month before any remaining days are counted.
If the End date is earlier than the Start date, the calculator keeps your inputs and shows the positive duration between them. It does not return a negative result.
If your calculation needs hours, minutes, or seconds, use the Time Duration Calculator. Date addition or subtraction belongs in a Date Calculator, while weekends and holidays belong in a Business Days Calculator; those are separate tasks and are not included here.
Date duration calculator FAQ
How do I calculate the number of days between two dates?
Choose both dates and read Total days. Turn on Include end date if both the first and last date should count.
Does the date duration include the end date?
Not by default. The default is elapsed time. Turn on Include end date to add the final calendar day to all displayed results.
Why show both years, months, days and total days?
Years, months, and days describe complete calendar units. Total days expresses the same interval as one absolute count, which is often easier to use in another calculation.
Does the calculator account for leap years?
Yes. It validates real calendar dates and accounts for February 29 and the actual length of each month.
