What is a tally counter?
A tally counter keeps a running total. Each time an event happens, you add one step to the count. You can subtract a step to correct a mistake, reset the total, or keep separate counters for different things.
An online tally counter works like a handheld clicker, but it can also use keyboard shortcuts, custom starting values, and custom step sizes. The current counters are saved in this browser so you can continue after refreshing or reopening the page.
How to use the tally counter
- Select the large number button whenever you want to add to the count.
- Select Subtract to correct a count or count backwards.
- Select the counter name or number to edit it directly. Change the step in the last row of the card.
- Select Add Counter when you need to track another total.
- Select Reset to return one counter to zero. Use Undo if the reset was accidental.
On a desktop keyboard, press Space, ↑, or + to add to the active counter. Press ↓ or - to subtract. The most recently selected counter is marked Active.
Tally counter examples
Count people
Start at zero and add one whenever a person enters. Use separate counters when you need distinct totals, such as adults and children.
Count workout reps
Add one after each repetition or set. A larger step can count repeated groups, such as five reps at a time.
Count inventory
Add one for each checked item, box, or part. Set the current value first when continuing a count that already started elsewhere.
Common uses for a tally counter
Tally counters are useful for counting people, inventory, workout repetitions, laps, classroom responses, observations, votes, and simple scores. They work best when the task needs a running total rather than a timed test, event history, or detailed scorecard.
Tally counter vs. click counter
For manual counting, a tally counter and a click counter usually describe the same tool: each click, tap, or key press changes a running total. A click speed or CPS test is different because it measures how quickly you click during a fixed time. This tool keeps totals and does not measure click speed.
Online tally counter vs. physical tally counter
A physical tally counter is a dedicated handheld device. An online counter uses a phone or computer and can keep multiple named counters, accept keyboard input, use a custom step, and restore saved counts in the same browser.
Tally counter FAQ
Is a click counter the same as a tally counter?
Yes, when both terms mean manually adding to a running count. A CPS test has a separate purpose: measuring click speed.
Can the counter count backwards or below zero?
Yes. Select Subtract or use a subtract shortcut. Counts can go below zero as long as they remain within JavaScript’s safe integer range.
Can I change the starting value or step?
Yes. Select the current number to enter a whole-number starting value, then set a positive whole-number step in the last row of the card.
Can I use more than one counter?
Yes. Select Add Counter to create another named counter. Each counter keeps its own value and step.
Does the counter keep my count after I close the page?
The counters are saved in this browser. Clearing browser storage or using a browser mode that blocks local storage can remove or prevent saved counts.
Can I use the tally counter on my phone?
Yes. The large number, subtract, reset, and options controls are designed for touch as well as mouse and keyboard input.
